In 1907 a new company, Strathaven Golf Club Limited, rented 50 acres of land from West Overton Farm on a 25 years lease for the construction of a 9-hole golf course. The Course was designed by Willie Fernie of Troon (1883 Open Champion) and attracted many visitors from the surrounding area with some players coming from as far a field as Glasgow!
Despite early setbacks, the Club was able to secure its future by the successful purchase of the Course from the Landlord in November 1932. The Clubhouse, a wooden hut with corrugated iron roof, had a common room, a small kitchen and lady and gentlemen locker rooms. Unfortunately, in February 1961, the Clubhouse was completely destroyed by fire. However, by July 1962, a fine new building incorporating a dwelling house for the Steward/Green Keeper and ample accommodation for members was officially opened.
Shortly thereafter, West Coldstream, an adjoining farm was put up for sale and the Club seized the opportunity to purchase the additional land allowing the Course to be extended to 18 holes. The additional 9 holes were designed and constructed by John R. Stutt Limited, Golf Course Architects. At this time thousands of young trees were planted and the result was a well featured 18-hole course, which came into play in March 1965.
The Clubhouse was greatly enlarged in 1966 with further alterations in 1970, 1975 and 1982. These improvements provided spacious accommodation for members. By 1998, the cost of maintaining the Clubhouse had become prohibitive and a fine new Clubhouse was constructed on the site of the former Clubhouse car park. The new building was officially opened on 28 May 1999.
Strathaven Golf Club has been the venue for many competitions including County Matches, the West of Scotland Girl Championship, the West of Scotland Championship and the Scottish Professional Championship. Strathaven Golf Club successfully hosted the LGU Girls International Matches in August 2004.
